How to identify your core values (a practical card-sort method)

Ask someone their values and they'll usually list admirable ones: integrity, family, excellence. Ask them what they actually optimized for in their last three hard decisions and you often get a different — more honest — list. The gap between those two lists is where careers go sideways.

Why values matter for your career

Every sustainable career decision passes through your values first. A role that violates a core value will drain you no matter how good it looks on paper. A role that feeds one will energize you through hard seasons. Values are the filter — but only the real ones, not the aspirational ones.

The card sort

Start with a broad list of values — thirty or forty. In the first round, pull out the ten that feel most alive for you right now. Don't overthink it; your first instinct is data.

In the second round, cut the ten down to five. This is where it gets honest: you're no longer choosing what's good, you're choosing what's yours. Notice which ones you defend and which ones you release without a fight.

Force the ranking

Five unranked values are a poster. Five ranked values are a decision-making tool. When two values collide — security versus growth, loyalty versus ambition — the order decides. Drag your five into sequence and sit with the discomfort of choosing which one wins.

Test against real decisions

Take your top value and replay a recent decision that felt wrong. Did you honor the value or trade it away? Then look at a decision you're facing now. The ranked stack won't make the decision for you, but it will tell you what the decision is actually about.
